Larry Hanauer, the man implicated in the release of the NIE has a very interesting history if this is correct and Clarice Fledman has identified the right guy.
A google of his name provides several links to hard core leftist websites that portray him as a victim of the neocon conspiracy to take over DOD. Mother Jones website says he was removed from his position at the Near East South Asian affairs section at the Pentagon so that Cheney appointees could turn “cherry-picked pieces of uncorroborated, anti-Iraq intelligence into talking points, on issues like Iraq's WMD and its links to Al Qaeda.”
So we certainly seem to have a motive. Once again, a “victim” of the neocon conspiracy leaks to the press to prove the neocons were cherry-picking intelligence. As with Ambassador Joe Wilson, it seems any incident of leaking classified or restricted information is justified if it is to stop the neocons. Oh by the way, if you haven’t really gotten in to this subject yet, it is no secret that when the leftists (and yes even some on the right with the whiff of fascism about them) use the term neocon they mean conservative jews.
When you get to the heart of the matter, what we have is a bunch of insider liberals who want to stop what they see as a jewish conspiracy to position the US to conquer the world. With such lofty goals in mind, it is easy to see why so many of these leakers feel justified and warranted in leaking classified intel. The left is saving us from the Jews after all.

Why isn't this whole issue in the general media?
A leaker is a criminal. Title 18 793 and 798 et al.
Unauthorized disclosure is a criminal act.
Not a whole of study needed to understand what damage can be done by handing classified info to
uncleared individuals.
Thank you,
