ISLAMABAD: Pakistani intelligence agencies have launched an extensive hunt for one Matiur Rehman, 30, a militant belonging to a sunni sectarian outfit Lashkar-e-Jhagnvi, after being informed by the US intelligence agencies that the Al Qaeda linked extremist has been tasked to attack the US interests in Pakistan.
I researched LeJ and here is some background: South Asian Terror Portal
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), a Sunni-Deobandi terrorist outfit was formed in 1996 by a break away group of radical sectarian extremists of the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), a Sunni extremist outfit, which accused the parent organisation of deviating from the ideals of its slain co- founder, Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. It is from Maulana Jhangvi that the LeJ derives its name. It was formed under the leadership of Akram Lahori and Riaz Basra. The LeJ is one of the two sectarian terrorist outfits proscribed on August 14, 2001, by President Pervez Musharraf.
The LeJ is also part of the MMA gang associated with the JUI and it's sub groups, HUM and HUJI. So it may just be the case that Matiur is a member of one of these groups and we have to pin down which one.
When you read this website it becomes clear that the Paki security forces have been involved in disassembling the LeJ with very high activity just recently. This may give us a real indication of why they have been targeted.
2006
August 1: An Anti-Terrorism Court in Multan hands death sentences on seven counts to two LeJ activists, Zahid Husain alias Zada and Shahabuddin, for killing six people, including five police personnel. The court also awarded life imprisonment on seven counts to their accomplice Ghulam Shabbir alias Doctor.
July 20: SF personnel arrest three LeJ cadres, Abdullah, Sajid and Mohammed Akram, from Khuzdar in the Balochistan province.
July 18: Security force personnel arrest a LeJ cadre, Arshad Ali alias Movia/Saif ullah, during a raid in Hyderabad in the Sindh province.
July 6: Six cadres of the LeJ, including the outfit’s deputy leader Mohammad Shakir, are arrested for planning attacks targeting a polo festival at Shandur town, bordering the Chitral and Gilgit districts.
Much more is listed.
The Terrorism Knowledge Base talks about LeJ:
The group has confirmed links with al Qaeda. Recently LeJ banded with two other Sunni extremist groups (Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammed) and together they are said to form the Pakistani wing of al Qaeda. In September 2002, three chemical labs were found in LeJ safe houses in Karachi. According to Pakistani authorities, LeJ members are not sophisticated enough to have maintained the stores of cyanide and other toxic chemicals found in the labs. They believe al Qaeda operatives, working with the LeJ, moved its chemical stores and shipments of gold out from Afghanistan to reestablish operations from Pakistan.
So the LeJ is strongly connected to HUM which is/was controlled by Fazlur Rehman Khalil, the 1998 UBL fatwa co-signitory.
Yup, starting to shape up that this is a paki plot wih al Qaeda elements. Just like 9/11.
